STATEMENT: “The sacrifice, commitment and achievements of our Olympic athletes are a supreme testament to the human will and spirit. Sadly, the plight of today’s American college graduates with Olympic aspirations is no different than it was 20 years ago when I competed in the Los Angeles Olympic Games: an uphill struggle and an unknown national disgrace. Our country is passionate about the Olympic movement (witness the billions of dollars spent by NBC to broadcast the Games) and resources are available–yet 99% of our college graduate athletes literally struggle to continue to train outside the NCAA system. U.S. Athletic Trust will become the leading Olympic Sport NGO (non governmental organization), serving as a model of reform for the inadequate American postcollegiate athlete support system. Our efforts and financial support will have an incredible impact on the lives of thousands of Olympic athletes.”
